For more than a decade I have been counselling people through difficulties such as depression, interpersonal conflict, anxiety, low self worth/esteem, addiction, grief, loss, and trauma. Helping them to move past the place where they are stuck and build up their ability to make the changes they want to make.

Read below to find out more about what to expect when you come to counselling, and practical information about my qualificationsfees , and location. There is also some specific information about counselling for sexual abuse, drug and alcohol problems,  NZTA alcohol and drug assessments, and supervision for health professionals.

What to Expect in Counselling

Professional counselling provides a place where you will be listened to without judgement, so you can:
  • explore your emotions, thoughts and behaviour and how they effect each other
  • become more aware of yourself, your values and what motivates you
  • plan and set goals
  • improve your relationships
  • reduce your stress
  • develop your sense of well-being
  • do things differently and bring about change in your life

I provide a professional and confidential counselling service, and practice according to the New Zealand Association of Counsellors Code of Ethics. You will find that I:
  • I felt at ease with Samantha . . . I felt like what I said mattered.

    am trustworthy
  • respect your confidentiality
  • listen to you carefully and sensitively
  • help you sort out how you would like things to be different
  • support you in making the changes you choose to make

At your first appointment I will do a full assessment of your situation. This to find out what it is that you want to achieve and to build a detailed picture of what might be impacting on you, so that I can choose the most appropriate type of counselling for your needs. We will also discuss how to arrange appointment changes or cancellations, and how payment will be made.

How long your counselling will take depends greatly on your individual circumstances. Some people facing a specific issue may require only one or two sessions. Other people with more complex concerns, for example recovering from a traumatic past, struggling with long-term depression, addictions, or grieving the loss of a loved one, may choose to have more regular and longer term counselling.

Counselling for Sexual Abuse

I have extensive experience counselling people who have been sexually abused and am skilled at supporting abuse survivors build on their strengths, to find a future free of pain and fear. Sexual abuse survivors have often had their trust broken many times, so I know it is important we establish what you need, to feel safe enough to talk about the things you find difficult to say to others. Then, together we can look at how your experiences have impacted on you, and work out what tools you need to move forward.

Counselling for Drug and Alcohol Problems

I have extensive experience helping people struggling with substance abuse/addictions. I enjoy helping people find freedom from these struggles and make improvements in the areas of their lives that substance abuse has negatively affected. Counselling can help you improve your relationships with yourself and others, find meaning in life, improve your ability to make choices, and to learn to live a life without substance abuse/addiction. In your first session I will assess the impact of your substance use and may need to refer you for medical support and/or to an intensive counselling service if this is appropriate.

Alcohol and Drug Assessments to Resit your Driver's Licence

If you have been indefinitely disqualifed from driving you will need to have an Alcohol and Drug Assessment before you can resit your licence. I am a Registered NZ Transport Authority (NZTA) Alcohol and Drug Assessor and can do this assessment for you.

Within my extensive experience as a counsellor, I have specialised skills working with people with co-existing issues (previously referred to as dual diagnosis), and can help you up skill for clients with both mental health diagnoses and, alcohol and drug issues. Supervisees tell me they appreciate the coaching style I use to encourage and support them as they grow in their professional practice.
