What is psychotherapy?

We must become the change we want to see. Mahatma Gandhi

It is a unique, safe, confidential clinical treatment for exploring important life challenges, patterns and transitions and making sense of them. It is a transformational professional relationship in which healing can occur.

Clients are encouraged to enter into a journey of compassion by speaking freely about their lives, thereby discovering their internal world. Pressing life issues and conflicts, relationship patterns, unconscious thoughts, feelings, secret wishes, beliefs held, trauma, hurts, losses will be considered along the way so that you can fully live your life with more love than fear.

Resolving your sleeping difficulties

An experienced therapist makes all the difference.  Christine Hatcher

Improve the quality of your sleep, waken with lots of energy, overcome waking during the night and stop your mind racing. I will help you sleep effectively by reaching into the subconscious mind, where emotional and habitual behavioural patterns form. The non sleeping pattern can be reversed by instilling a desire for sleep in the conscious mind, where the desire for change originates. Very soon you will be sleeping like a baby.

Treating your depression

If you’re going through hell, keep going.  Winston Churchill

Move through your depression and re-find quality and joy in life. By changing thought and action I will work with your strengths in an open, warm, proactive, friendly and affirming way to create conditions for transforming this state to one of hope and vitality.

Relieving your stress and anxiety (home or work related)

You don’t have to see the whole staircase – just take the first step.  Martin Luther King

Are you in crisis? Find out what life can be like when you are comfortable just to “be”, without racing thoughts. We will work together, with mindfulness based stress reduction, to find the best ways to make stress work for, not against you. You will learn easy ways to cope with stress, learn how to say “no!” And learn how to minimise overload while being effective. I will help you ease any type of anxiety; develop stability as well as flexibility. You will feel confident and strong in any difficult situation.

Solving any relationship issue (crisis or enhancement)

My interest is in the future because I am going to spend the rest of my life there.  Charles Kettering

Create the lasting, loving relationships you really want to have. Gain practical skills for enriching and enhancing relationships with others. Instead of hitting the same stalemate, improve intimacy and gain or increase the love you deserve.
I commit to excellence of care and will work with couples or individuals, in a supportive way, to find solutions. I am non-judgemental, confidential, trustworthy and discreet with expertise also gained by working for relationship services.

Supporting you through menopause

Be yourself: everyone else is already taken.  Oscar Wilde

Sixty is the new forty, with attitude! Your body is wise and experiencing an emotional and empowering transition. Learn how to live fully, be in your sexuality, and speak your mind as never before. I will empower you to be the woman you are best at being. I will encourage flow and trust in the process that leads to clarity and grace. Together we will walk through the shadow of losses and you will emerge free to meet your own beauty. Knowing and understanding your essence implicitly will be liberating and grounding.

Rebuilding your life after sexual abuse

When you come to the edge of all the light you know, and are about to step off into the darkness of the unknown, faith is knowing one of two things will happen: there will be something solid to stand on, or you will be taught how to fly.  Barbara J. Winter

You will actively participate in reclaiming your power, your self and your life in a safe and supportive environment. You will make practical, tangible steps, at your own pace, towards healing change. I will be with you every step of the way as you develop healthier ways of coping. I will be there as you explore the past, identify the effects of the abuse, let go of shame, break the silence, turn anger into action, name the losses; step by step towards an expanded capacity for hope. I am ACC registered.

Overcoming your addictions

Sergeants, doctors, girl-friends – everybody seemed to be picking on him. But he couldn’t be an alcoholic at his age, could he?  Alcoholics Anonymous

Denial of reality is more powerful than any alcohol, drugs, sex or shopping. Pushing reality away leads to breakdown. I will show you a safe, gentle way to face what you most want to block out. I will supply support and empathy as well as challenge you to come home to yourself by living honestly and respectfully. I will guide in practical ways and give space for your own solid truth to unfold. Together we will face whatever is unmanageable and make it manageable.

Long-term psychotherapy

Malvolio: "Be not afraid of greatness: some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon 'em." Twelfth Night (ii, v, 156-159) William Shakespear

For people who want to engage in a journey of growth and exploration I provide long-term psychtherapy. I have been trained in  psychodynamic and psychoanalytic psychotherapy which focuses on using the dynamics of the therapeutic relationship to bring about healing. Research tells us that therapy actually changes the way the brain functions and therefore can re-define who we are. Brain patterns, similar to those that are activated when a child is being nurtured by its mother, are replicated in therapy. This creates an opportunity to re-do any “growing up” we may have missed out on. Therapy can take a client through each stage of development, and re-create a different, and more useful growing up experience, thereby providing new foundations upon which to build a happier life and better relationships.
