I am enthusiastic about helping men and women who feel stuck, stuck feeling the same awful feelings or making the same unhelpful choices. I am skilled at helping people in this situation find a way out of the mire. When working with clients I am sensitive, pragmatic, challenging, and patient. I will work at your pace to help you reach your goals. I specialise in depression, panic, anxiety, overeating, obesity, shame and isolation.

Counselling for depression

I have a special interest in depression, in all its forms, and will tailor your therapy to help you get the best outcome for the particular type of depression you are suffering from.
Andrew Solomon in his book The Noonday Demon compares depression to a cough. Everyone can hear you cough, but are you coughing because you smoke, or because you have a sore throat, or tuberculosis, or lung cancer, or simply a cold? We expect the treatment to be different depending on the illness that is causing the cough.

Likewise with depression there are some visible symptoms, which for many people will include such things as sleep and eating problems, lack of energy, difficulty concentrating and making decisions, loss of motivation, irritability, outbursts of anger or tearfulness, despair, loss of pleasure, hopelessness etc. However as with a cough, many different problems can be the cause of these symptoms and they require different treatments.

You may know what brought on your depression or have no idea why you feel so miserable, you may have never had it before or struggled with it all your life. If you want to find out more about your depression, I can help you to identify what kind of depression you have, and which treatment options will be most successful for you.

Counselling for grief, loss, and change

Generally we are able to get through the emotional pain and practical adjustments that come following a loss, with the help of family and friends. However, sometimes we find ourselves stuck in the grief process, unable to move on with our lives or occasionally consumed by it and barely able to function. I am experienced at helping people adjust to the changes brought about by all sorts of losses, and complete the grieving process so they can re-engage in life.

Read my articles the journey through grief and the four tasks of mourning for more information on the grieving process.
