practitioners claiming to be counsellors do not have to be registered with the government. There are however several counselling associations in New Zealand which ensure their members have certain qualifications, have been assessed by the association as competent, and abide by a Code of Ethics. The largest of these associations is the New Zealand Association of Counsellors (NZAC) you can check if someone is a Member of NZAC online at www.nzac.org.nz
and going to "search for an NZAC counsellor".
any practitioner claiming to be a psychotherapist must be registered by the government through The Psychotherapists Board of Aoteroa New Zealand (PBANZ). You can check someone's registration status online at www.pbanz.org.nz
and going to "Public Register".
only psychologists who are currently registered with the New Zealand Psychologists Board and who hold a current Annual Practising Certificate can legally practise (or claim to be practising) psychology in New Zealand. You can check someone's registration status online at www.psychologistsboard.org.nz
and going to "online register of psychologists".
