it is only the future you can change.

Edith Shawyer counsellor titirangi west auckland

Welcome

I would love to help you remove the obstacles that are blocking your path to a life you wish to enjoy.

I have many years’ experience counselling children, teens, adults, couples, families and groups. I employ a wide range of interventions in my therapy practice and am adept at engaging my clients in a therapeutic style that will suit their own interests and personality. Some people prefer a cognitive (talking) approach, while others like to express themselves through drawing, art or storytelling.

I have had depression since I was 18 years old I am now 42. Receiving counselling from Edith Shawyer was the best thing that happened to me, I started up a business working for myself and the sessions with Edith kept me on course. Edith is the best counsellor I have been to. She saved my life.

Counselling for Children and Adolescents

I have a special passion for working with children and adolescents. Too many parents blame themselves for the difficulties their children are experiencing and bring their children to therapy when situations have become extreme. Don't wait. Early interventions will avoid a lot of pain and emotional distress in the future.

Counselling young people effectively, particularly young children often requires a departure from traditional talk therapy. Children are helped to resolve their difficulties with a variety of Expressive Arts Therapies. With therapy, their confidence increases as they become more able to express themselves, problem solve using new skills to imagine solutions, and employ coping skills to manage both their inner and outer world.

Adolescents enjoy a combination of Expressive Arts Therapies and Reality Therapy. Reality therapy works well for teens, as it helps them to identify their needs for survival; love and belonging; fun; power and freedom, and to work how to get those needs met without upsetting everybody around them.
With Edith's kind and gentle guidance our daughter found the skills she needed to manage her anxieties. As a family we found the approach ideal and would recommend Edith without hesitation to anyone struggling with the same challenges.

In my experience, there has not been a situation with which Edith has not been equipped to cope when working with adolescents; whether it has been with disengaged students; those challenged with living with ADHD or Asperger's Syndrome; sexual orientation; anger management or dysfunctional families. Edith's commitment to her to her clients and the belief that everyone has the capacity for change and growth, and sound professional knowledge, make her an outstanding therapist.

Our daughter has enjoyed Drama with Edith since she started school. In fact she refuses to take any other activities after school if it gets in the way of Drama. She is dyslexic and despite the effort it requires her to read and write; she has become a confident speaker and will take up any opportunity to present. Drama with Edith has supported her in enjoying public speaking and overcoming nervousness by finding a real thrill in engaging her listeners.  Dorothee Guthrie

Nana Edith is really funny, because she is acting while she is teaching us. She is kind and never gets angry. I also like the drawing and art we do and the costumes Nana Edith brings in. It is so much fun to dress up. I am now more confident and less scared to talk to people.  Tiana Henning, Age 9

Couples and Family Counselling

This is a journey between two, or a group of people who need assistance and a safe environment to effectively communicate their feelings and needs; physically and mentally; emotionally and spiritually.
The counselling will help people to:
  • change levels of perception and suspend judgement
  • change communication if demeaning and dysfunctional
  • stop putting intense negative value on the action of others.
  • change interactions and the quality of relationships
  • accept we can only control our own behaviour and not the actions of others.

Spiritual Intelligence

'Spiritual Intelligence is the ability to behave with wisdom and compassion, while maintaining inner peace, regardless of the situation'
Cindy Wigglesworth

I do enjoy helping people on the exciting journey of discovering for themselves what spiritual path they want to tread. This programme is for adults who wish to grow into their full potential as a human being in alignment with all the world's great wisdom traditions. Spiritual Intelligence can be developed either within or independent of a religious belief or tradition. It is a journey of discovery in which my role is to guide you through the 4 quadrants of Self Awareness; Universal Awareness; Self Mastery; Social Mastery and Spiritual Presence; and the 21 skills of Spiritual Intelligence. As a Creative Arts Therapist there will also be an opportunity for clients who wish to express their ideas and feelings creatively to expand the concepts through Art; Drama; Movement and writing.

Marieke Pastor, Counsellor/Trainer. Past director of the Human Development and Training Centre
Most of my life has been spent in the Education sector, in diverse roles from teacher to Principal to RTLB. Running parallel to my teaching career there has been a deep commitment to children's Drama workshops which I have directed in both New Zealand and London. My greatest joy is observing the changes and growth in children, socially, cognitively and emotionally through drama experience. When I returned from England having completed a three-year post-graduate diploma in Dramatherapy I took up the role of RTLB at Kaitaia College. During this period I studied and qualified in a great variety of therapies from cognitive to expressive all of which I use with my clients; and the counsellors I supervise.

When I left the College in addition to my private practice, I continued working for the Ministry of Education with 'at risk students'. I am now in West Auckland in private practice as a therapist and Supervisor.

Each year I am committed to continuing my experience and journey through participating or initiating workshops with the NZ Association of Counsellors and the Australian and New Zealand Arts Therapy Association.

Supervision Services

I provide supervision to counsellors, therapists, people going for membership and those who are qualified.

I think of my role in supervision as that of an 'anteambulo' literally 'one who clears the path'. The supervision is supervisee led with two objectives; facilitating your development; and maintaining accountability for your work. I work in a collaborative relationship with learning as its heart. Both as a cognitive and a Creative Arts therapist I offer an environment where we can play with ideas and feelings which leads to new learning that is integrated into your practice.

I always depart from my fortnightly external Supervision feeling pleasantly surprised with my learning and 'take-aways'. I knew I needed someone who was skilled; but I also sought someone who was varied in their approach. My work with Edith has instilled reflection in my practice as well as my self-care. I recommend Edith as a compassionate, non-judgmental and research orientated External Supervisor.
