Areas of Special Interest

I can help you explore a range of challenges relating to depression, anxiety and phobias, anger issues, trauma, and more. I have expertise working with young people, children and whānau as well as adults.

Counselling/Therapy Services

Therapy can be immensely helpful but it can be a big step for people, especially if you've never been before.

I utilise a range of therapies and try to tailor it to you and what your needs and goals are. The approach is talking based but also action focused with tasks or activities to take away with you and try out between sessions.

The benefits you might expect from therapy would be things like:
  • Increased insight into what is going on for you or your whānau and how it might have developed.
  • Developing strategies/skills to better cope or manage what you or your whānau are going through.
  • A sense of safety and support to express what is going on for you or our whānau and being accepted.
  • Awareness of relationships, culture, lifestyle and other factors which might impact how you or your whānau feeling.

It's good to keep in mind that therapy isn't a cure-all and there are some downsides sometimes, e.g., feeling upset talking about what's bothering you. We will try and maximise the benefits and minimise the risks so that you can get the most out of it.

Counselling/Therapy Approach

I have expertise in a number of evidence-based therapies including:Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Family and Systemic Therapy. I have a working understanding of some Māori models of health and intervention.

What isn't in my approach?
Some people really want to deep dive into their past and understand what has happened to them which is completely understandable. While I do focus on building insight and understanding how you might have come to where you are, I also have a future-focused practical side. For example, what can we do now to manage the impact of past events, or see them in a different light.
