Areas of Special Interest
I enjoy working with a wide variety of clients and problems they bring to counselling. I have a professional interest in working with clients who have experienced trauma and am an approved provider of ACC sensitive claims counselling.
Each of us deserves and is capable of having a rich, purposeful and satisfying life. Life inevitably involves hitting bumps in the road that create problems in our life - problems that often try to define us, isolate us from important people in our lives, and rob us of that 'spark' that comes from living a fulfilling life.
In our work together, you'll have a supportive, caring and nonjudgmental environment to to explore the problems you’re experiencing and the changes you wish to come into your life. The foundation of my counselling practice is respect – respect for you as my client, the path you’ve been on that has lead you to counselling, and the coping strategies you’ve been using to get you through, so I'll work collaboratively with you and at your pace.
I am trained in narrative and collaborative therapies, which are respectful therapies that see a person as being separate from the problems they are experiencing, and possessing unique skills and knowledges that can inform the way forward. Narrative therapy is particularly interested in storytelling and how problems like to tell stories about us that we often start to believe, for example I'm a terrible person, it was my fault, I'm not good enough. These stories start to have negative impacts on our lives, a vicious cycle that provides further 'evidence' for the problem story. Narrative therapy is about exploring those stories - their history, who tells them and co-creating an alternative story that you're happy to put your name to.
