As a result of my own personal experience with addiction and recovery I know first-hand how important it is for individuals to feel truly understood when it comes to the reality and insanity of addiction.
My personal experience with addiction enables me to walk alongside my clients with an empathetic and non-judgmental understanding. Addiction is an isolating illness which over time becomes debilitating and soul destroying; often driving a wedge between the ones we love and destroys the relationships we need the most. You will be listened to empathically and supported in developing an understanding as to what is happening for you and encouraged to find the inner strength to gain control over your addiction. I will provide you with a unique set of evidence based skills along with some secrets from my own personal experience which will assist you in your journey to a life where the things that are currently hold you back no longer have control.

Speaking with someone who truly understands what it is I was going through without judgement as they have been there themselves, instantly took away the complete isolation and insanity I was feeling after my first relapse. Lexy has an abundance of knowledge, tools and understanding that has kept me going and kept me clean for the past 4 months. ~ anonymous

What is Addiction Counselling and how does it help?

Addiction Counselling can take place in different forms, most often in one-on-one fashion but is also available in a couple, family and group format. Whatever method is taken, it provides an individual with the opportunity to discuss their relationship with the problem substance or behaviour, and its impact on their life and the life of others they care about.

Addiction counselling is a highly specialized form of counselling that views serious and problematic use of a substance or behaviour as far more than simply a symptom of underlying issues, although inevitably such underlying issues are present. The problematic and addictive elements of one’s life are assessed first and foremost. It is only after an appropriate evaluation of what is underway can a specialized treatment plan be developed to assist the individual to achieve their goals for a better life.

Addiction Counselling is a facilitative process which helps individuals overcome any personal fears and anxiety which they may be experiencing. The primary benefit is that it will help someone in difficulty to take action. It allows an intensive exploration of the sources of the addictive behaviour and enables the person to reach a level of self-understanding that's essential to a good recovery.

I approached Lexy Davis when I was at the lowest point of my life. She was professional, compassionate and understanding. I felt instantly at ease and could talk openly and honestly with her. Lexy has gone out of her way to help me. She is the most honest, caring person that I have the utmost trust to successfully lead me to my recovery. If it wasn't for this wonderful person I am not sure where I would be today. As she has "been there" she has a wealth of knowledge and understanding that not many psychologists can offer. I highly recommend Lexy Davis and thank her for giving me faith and hope for a happy, fulfilling life in the near future. - anonymous

Comprehensive Assessments

A comprehensive assessment is considered to be essential to identify the help that is likely to be most effective for the individual. The goal is to determine the nature of the problems, including mental and physical health, spiritual well-being, family, social and cultural strengths and issues, offending and legal problems, and develop a treatment plan with the person seeking help. A quality assessment is the basis for matching the different treatment options available to the individual’s specific needs and circumstances.

Individual Counselling

One important element of therapy involves helping you to understand the causes of your problems and to learn tools and strategies to change.
This can include equipping you with psychological knowledge relevant to you, and helping you to apply that knowledge effectively in your life. It can also provide you with an important source of support and understanding, and at times, a process of healing, recovery and growth. Individual sessions are weekly for fifty minutes. We work at your pace, exploring and processing thoughts, emotions and behaviour within relationships and other contexts. As I get to know you in the early sessions of your therapy, the form of therapy will take shape, determined by your circumstances and specific needs. Together we will keep track of your therapy as it progresses, reflecting and reviewing along the way.

Family Intervention/Support

Living with addiction can put family members under unusual stress.
Addiction is a family disease that stresses the family to the breaking point, impacts the stability of the home, the family's unity, mental health, physical health, finances, and overall family dynamics. Normal routines are constantly being interrupted by unexpected or even frightening kinds of experiences that are part of living with alcohol and drug use. What is being said often doesn't match up with what family members sense, feel beneath the surface or see right in front of their eyes. The alcohol or drug user as well as family members may bend, manipulate and deny reality in their attempt to maintain a family order that they experience as gradually slipping away. The entire system becomes absorbed by a problem that is slowly spinning out of control. Little things become big and big things get minimized as pain is denied and slips out sideways.

In my early sixties I found myself faced with an identity crisis, what was important to me as I headed toward my 70s and 80s. I realised that I had positioned myself in a lifestyle of heavy drinking, and the fear of how this would eventually affect my health. I have been extremely fortunate to find an addictions counsellor like Lexy, with a gift to encourage determination for wellness, spirituality, empathy and kindness. Lexy champions the human rights of people with addiction to accept the addiction diagnosis without discrimination, or judgement. ~ anonymous.

My approach to addictions therapy

As a result of my personal and professional experience with addiction and my own journey in recovery, I hold an authentic understanding of how it feels to be lost within active addiction, and also what it takes to find a path to a life worth living again.
My passion lies with helping others finding their strengths to re-connect with yourself and with those that care for you. I have trained to work as an addiction counsellor specialising in alcohol and drug treatment. I use a combination of personal experience and evidence based methods to form a programme custom built around your individual needs. The approaches listed below are just a few of my preferred modalities I utilise to encourage the rapid reduction of harmful behaviours, so we can move ahead with the building of personal insight and learning the skills required to step into a new life free from the oppression of active addiction.
