Paul Jacobson

paul jacobson counsellor wellington
Our lives are punctuated by a series of small and large losses, how we hold or let go of these determines our future. Through the counselling relationship we learn what to discard and what to take forward for optimum wellbeing.
Change is possible at any time, and indeed is the nature of all interactions and situations. The will to affect change and follow it through is the key to successfully moving through blockages and problems in our lives. Counselling is a way to empower this will through dialogue and emotional shifts stimulated by the uncovering of new possibilities. Through the process of counselling our perspective of problems loosens and becomes more pliable. All situations are dependent on perspective, when we can change a damaging perspective to a more free and enabling one, we can move on.

I work from the premise that we all have our own inner wisdom and knowledge which can be brought to the surface through the counselling process. My job is to work with you to intergrate trust, respect, power and humour into a whole, bringing openness to change and a lighter view to the often heavy thinking which can dominate our lives.

Areas of specialty:

  • grief, loss, bereavement
  • anger
  • depression
  • self esteem
  • anxiety
  • life crisis
  • home/workplace stress

Theoretical Approaches

I am fully committed to working with clients to reach their potential through a cooperative momentum once a relationship is established. I work from a foundation of person centered, solution focused therapy and employ mindfulness meditation, focusing, narrative therapy, cognitive behavioural (CBT) and existential therapy depending on client preference. I have trained in reiki healing which some clients find very useful when used in conjunction with counselling as a way of integrating new knowledge.
