Paula Moneypenny

Counsellor & Supervisor

How I Work

I am a compassionate, empathic, encouraging, supportive and gentle therapist who will listen to you. I will work with you to identify, reflect upon and bring about the transformation you desire in your life and relationships.

Counselling is an opportunity to have a conversation that invites care, reflection, respect and new learnings about yourself and the potential to create new beginnings for your life. I work collaboratively with a focus on what supports and sustains you.

Along with Narrative Therapy, I utilise Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Emotion-Focused Therapy for Trauma (EFTT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) techniques (Mindful Self-Compassion); and can teach skills such as Mindfulness, relaxation, relational skills training. I am trained in treating trauma and traumatic memories. I also support clients with attachment and self-esteem issues through developing self-compassion and self-soothing skills.

Who I work with

I work with children, young people, adults, and groups. Counselling is about relationships so I welcome the presence of support people, partners, family members, friends, colleagues, or anyone you would like to bring with you.

I work with all issues including:

  • stress
  • anxiety
  • depression
  • grief
  • PTSD
  • low self-esteem
  • bullying and anger
  • recovery

Confidentiality & Ethics

I take all possible steps to maintain privacy and confidentiality. Confidentiality cannot be guaranteed in some circumstances, especially in situations that involve imminent danger to clients, or people that they know.

I adhere to the NZ Association of Counsellors Code of Ethics and uphold the key principles of the Treaty of Waitangi, namely “protection, participation and partnership with Maori”.

Supervision Services

I provide supervision to practitioners in the fields of health and social practice (including counselling, occupational therapy, nursing, midwifery, social work, and human services).

As a professional supervisor my aim is to create an ethically-sound, respectful and safe working relationship, in which practitioners can discuss aspects of their work in a confidential, collegial environment as a way of monitoring and developing their practice and enhancing the counselling process for the client and themselves.

About Paula

I am a Fulbright scholar so my work is predicated on the principles of friendship, collaboration, peace, kindness, compassion, and social justice.

I am a trained Narrative Therapist and Supervisor. I have clinical experience as a senior practitioner in primary, middle and secondary schools specialising in working with children, young people and their parents. I also have extensive experience working with adults in a diverse range of settings, including private practice and agencies.

I work in private practice providing counselling to private clients, and am contracted to provide counselling for ACC Sensitive Claims as well as PHO and EAP clients.
