Counselling/Therapy Services

Seeking therapy can be a nerve wracking experience, especially if you have reached out before and did not get the help you needed. I work with people at their own pace, and I regularly check in to see if the therapy feels useful, makes sense and fits with your worldview.

Psychotherapy provides an opportunity to look more deeply at ourselves and our unique experiences of the world. This includes understanding why we think, feel and act the way we do. Speaking to someone who is trained to listen provides an opportunity to make meaning of your thoughts, feelings and actions. From here, possibilities for strengthening, letting go and moving forward can occur.

My practice is LGBTIQ friendly.
I am committed to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.

Counselling/Therapy Approach

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy: In psychodynamic psychotherapy, we look at how your past experiences influence how you feel and act now. You may have developed habitual ways of feeling, behaving and relating to others that were useful at the time but feel harmful or limiting now. Understanding how and why these feelings came about can help to reduce the grip they have on you and make room for growth, new perspectives, or different choices to develop.

I am experienced in trauma therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Family Based Treatment (FBT or The ‘Maudsley’ approach for adolescents with eating disorders) and I draw from these models when appropriate in my sessions.

Background and Experience

My experience includes working at Tupu Ora Regional Eating Disorders Service providing individual and family-based therapies to adolescents and adults with eating disorders; and at Help Auckland, a leading service in sexual abuse care, providing crisis support and short term therapy to individuals and families. I also have experience at Segar House, a specialist service in the treatment of personality disorders and complex trauma, where I provided individual therapy and facilitated DBT skills groups.

I have a background in nursing and I have worked in various acute settings including emergency, oncology and end-of-life-care. I have a special interest in helping people manage the personal challenges of working in the helping professions.
