Counselling Services

I have more than 20 years’ experience as a counsellor, informal mediator and life coach, helping individuals and couples to create fulfilling lives and relationships.

I work with adults, couples, and individuals from a wide range of backgrounds, on many issues including:
  • Couple counselling
  • Informal mediation
  • Separation issues
  • Parenting plans
  • Personal growth
  • Confidence and self-esteem
  • Grief and loss
  • Life transitions

My Counselling Approach

Counselling is about learning the skills needed in order to grow from life’s ups and downs. This growth will help you to live a productive life, and to develop and sustain meaningful relationships.

My approach to counselling is solution focussed and collaborative, building on the strengths you already have. You will find me accepting, caring and respectful.  I believe that you are not the problem, but that the problem is the problem. In your sessions we will work together to sort out what the problem is, and how to expand your skills to deal with the issues effectively.

You must do it by yourself,
but you cannot do it alone.

Parenting Plans

A large portion of my caseload over the years has consisted of clients who have made applications through the Family Court and requested assistance in negotiating parenting plans after separation. I am experienced in identifying the matters in dispute, facilitating discussion and assisting in reaching agreements to the benefit of all parties, outside of Family Court.

Parents separating and in conflict can have negative repercussions on their children, if it is not managed carefully. While your relationship may be changing, your role as a parent is for life. I encourage parents to be responsible for reducing the negative effects of conflict on children and to make arrangements with their best interests in mind. In order to assist this process, I have developed a range of shared parenting plans, that provide for time with both parents according to each other's work schedules as well as children's activities, schools, driving considerations etc. These plans simply provide a starting point in which to discuss the options best suited to your family's unique needs. In this process I remain committed to promoting individual and family well-being in a supportive environment and to assist families, couples and individuals in working through conflict, transition and crisis.

"Val assisted me when I was going through a separation and dealing with my ex-partner and arrangements for his contact with our children. It was helpful to hear the best way to communicate and make future plans, while keeping our emotional issues separate to be dealt with at another time. Val has had lots of experience in this area so I felt confident and happy to know she had the children’s interest as a priority. I had separate sessions with Val to talk through my angry feelings over the separation, which helped a lot. Grateful thanks."

Couples Counselling

Talking together with a third person present can often help couples resolve differences civilly and constructively. Issues that may have seemed overwhelming become more manageable. Counselling can assist in resolving conflict, it can also create clarity about what each of you feels, thinks and wants, and give you some ideas about improving your communication and ability to resolve difficult issues. You can begin counselling either together or separately.

For couples who are separating, working through the problems of separation with a counsellor experienced in this area, will help you to deal with the grief, anger and sadness that is often associated with a separation.

"We are an older couple who decided some counselling might help to work through Issues we were having with our family that were impacting on our relationship. My partner was hesitant as first, as he had not had a good experience with past counselling when he separated. However, he felt very comfortable with Val as she was very professional and even-handed in all our sessions together. We have been able to get some clarity about what was bothering each of us and how that affected our relationship and the wider family. We were able to put some things into practice that improved things immeasurably. Thank you Val. We feel very happy to have found you and will recommend your services to others."

Counselling Individuals

People who come to counselling usually want something in their life to be different. I offer a confidential and private opportunity to work out what changes you desire and how to make those changes.

"Val has been a life saver for me. It took me a lot of courage to begin counselling, but I felt right at home at our very first meeting. She is warm, calming and wise."
