How do you experience your world, are you in a boat bobbing around on a merciless sea or are you the captain of our own ship? If you have a strong internal locus of control you believe that you are responsible for many of the outcomes and problems in your life. For instance if you fail your exams or experience relationship conflict you take responsibility for your circumstances, and are more willing to blame yourself and not others. Alternatively people who have a strong external locus of control blame their environment or other people for the problems they experience in their life.
Taking responsibility for one’s life and past actions is a key aspect of personal development. When we begin to take responsibility for the outcomes in our life we can begin to stop being the victim from the perceived actions of others, the environment, and the past. We can begin to develop different choices and outcomes in our life. It is then possible to reframe our past so that we are no longer tied to the narratives and stories that may hold us back from happiness and personal success.
