Jane Nicholson

I’ve been a psychotherapist for 20+ years and feel privileged to do this work. It’s often difficult to seek help as we tend to think we should be able to work things out on our own. But people often comment after they start therapy, that it IS helpful and they wished they’d begun sooner.

Counselling/Therapy Services

I offer support and psychotherapy for those struggling with a wide range of emotional/psychological issues. All sorts of reasons bring people to therapy but it’s usually because something is not working in their lives. It may be distressing feelings that intrude, maybe overwhelming anxiety or feeling very fragile and emotional, or perhaps ongoing illhealth. Sometimes people know what’s wrong, while others just feel lost, confused, deeply unhappy or unsatisfied. Others realise they keep behaving in self destructive ways and want to stop. Many people come to therapy worrying they are making a mountain out of a molehill, or that they won’t make sense or be understood. So it’s a courageous step and often a last resort. But being able to talk about oneself, exploring thoughts and feelings and experiences, both past and present, can help in surprising ways and be a catalyst for change. Therapy can help to strengthen one’s self esteem and sense of identity and agency; to develop greater insight; to manage and relieve symptoms, like overwhelming anxiety, sadness, anger; we might discover or recognise more subtle and perhaps unconscious motivations and patterns; and enlarge one’s capacity to engage in life, in work, play and relationships.

Counselling/Therapy Approach

Psychotherapy can be about support and help through a crisis or a more extended exploration of what’s not working in your life and why. It works by just talking and feeling about everything as it arises and allowing the space for your self and your issues to unfold; and perhaps unknown parts of yourself and your experience to be known, understood and integrated. It can be distressing at times and generate a sometimes powerful mix of feelings but can be ultimately liberating too.

Background and Experience

I have 30+ years experience working in the mental health field in NZ and the UK, as a counsellor and social worker, and eventually training as a psychotherapist in the early 1990s. I’m a registered psychotherapist with the Psychotherapy Board of Aotearoa New Zealand and member of the New Zealand Association of Psychotherapists. I also take EAP referrals through Stratos/Benestar.
