Montem Counselling

Life is meaningful when we’re aptly connected to ourselves, to others, and to the world. While I specialise in high-conflict couple therapy, I accept general practice clients – particularly those experiencing anxiety or depression. I also offer executive coaching, and clinical supervision.

Areas of Special Interest

  • Therapy: relationships, depression, anxiety & phobias, death, grief & loss, stress, frustration & anger, abuse, neglect & trauma, identity & confidence.
  • Executive coaching: business policy, career development, and performance

Counselling Services

As a counsellor, my focus is on goal-orientated short to medium therapy (3 to 9 sessions) guiding people in assessing their problems and encouraging them to take positive steps to resolve these issues. I aim to build resilience and self-reliance.

Only when problems have built up over a lifetime, you may decide on a more psychotherapeutic approach, where I assist you to modify your values, thoughts, feelings, and actions. This is a longer-term process, taking some 20 sessions over six months to a year.

Using open questions, my role is to enable you – without judgement by me – to develop your own plan. I do not advise; although, when helpful, I may offer researched information. My methods are evidence-based, scientifically-informed, and conform to best practice.

Modalities including theoretical orientation and techniques used:

  • Rogerian person-centred
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
  • Solution Focused Brief Therapy
  • Behavioural
  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy
  • Couples Developmental Model
  • Systemic Family Therapy
  • Gestalt
  • Transactional Analysis
  • EMDR

Background and Experience

Over five years clinical experience in private practice and with non-for-profit orgnanisations, including Home & Family Counselling, North Shore Living Without Violence, and Citizens Advice Bureau. Professional development certificates in supervision, couple therapy, DBT, and anger-management.

Plus some thirty years internationally in both business and public service as a senior executive and consultant, including: senior executive – Imperial Chemical Industries plc; chief policy advisor – State Services Commission; Assistant Director – Morrison & Co Investment Banking; consultant – Index International (now part of Boston Consulting Group); and captain – British Army Intelligence Corps.

Supervision Services

The purpose of supervision is to promote the interests and wellbeing of supervisees’ clients.

I provide oversight of supervisees’ casework and professional issues by reviewing and assessing client treatment-plans, including short- and long-term goals. I review clinical records to evaluate the necessary level of client care. I use coaching techniques in assisting supervisees to solve problems and implement interventions.

I encourage the development of counselling skills and approaches through reflective evaluations and assessments. And I take responsibility for addressing legal and ethical issues within supervisees’ practice.

In addition, I facilitate learning and growth to meet practice and competency standards, including registration; build resilience for current and future opportunities and challenges; support supervisees in developing skills and strategies for managing workplace pressure and self-care; and foster the development of leadership skills.

Crucially, I see the role of the supervisor is to inspire and motivate supervisees in an emotionally exacting profession.

Frequency of supervision is according to regulatory guidelines. Fees for students are by negotiation.
