Counselling Services

Counselling Therapy is a process of re-education, exploration and discovery. It is a holistic approach to your wellbeing which helps you learn the skills to become more emotionally balanced and develop resources to help you feel more in control. I work alongside you to explore all aspects of your health and to develop a practice of mindful awareness. This process re-wires the brain to develop new patterns which bring balance to your emotions and into everything you do in life.

We will explore and discover why you keep making the same unhelpful or damaging decisions, why you experience conflict in your relationships, or why you ‘just can’t be contented and happy’. When you gain a better understanding of your issues you’re better able to determine how to deal with challenges in a more resourceful and healthy way.

Counselling Approach

Perhaps the most important element in the effectiveness of therapy, counselling and supervision is the relationship between the practitioner and client. I see that we are both equals and I offer a friendly, warm and supportive environment with a focus on consciousness development to grow self awareness.

In addition to talk therapy and mindfulness I may also use sandtray therapy, drawing therapy, dream interpretation, meditation, relaxation, body/mind focusing as well as other techniques.

My approach is a combination of my background and training in psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, counselling, yogic philosophy, cognitive counselling, mind/body focusing, dream interpretation, career development, clinical supervision and reflective professional development.

About Me

I’m originally from Canada so I hold both an inside and outside view of Southland and Southlanders and an understanding of some of the unique issues they face. Twenty-two years ago travelled to New Zealand after having lived in Japan for four years. At this time I met and married a rural fella and settled on a farm in Southland.

I’ve been in private practice since 2004 as a counsellor and have worked as professional supervisor for several years for a number of organisations throughout Southland.

Supervision Services

Professional Supervision is for managers, leaders, employers, educators and health care workers who want to advance their skills in working more resourcefully with clients, employees, colleagues and students. It’s also for those who want to develop reflexivity and/or a more balanced commitment to their work role.

Professional Supervision provides you the opportunity to talk with a fellow professional who can see your issues from an uninvolved perspective. It provides you the opportunity to reflect objectively on the way you relate to your work environment and to those with whom you work. Because everything you talk about is confidential you’re able to be completely honest without it affecting your position in the community, or your role and relationships within the workplace.

I can support you to reflect on areas in which you experience difficulties and help you thrive within your work role. Supervision is not limited to any workplace concern but typical issues are ethical matters, managing stress and anxiety, work-life balance, handling seemingly irresolvable work relationship issues, maintaining clear boundaries, setting goals, recognising professional development opportunities and dealing with personal trauma associated with client work.
