Background and Experience

I’ve been working as a Psychologist for around 20 years. I was trained and qualified in the UK and made the move to New Zealand 15 years ago. Having worked across public and private sectors in a range of practitioner focused and leadership roles (UK, Australia and NZ), in 2017 I became a Chartered Member of the Institute of Organisational Psychology (IOP). I have since been self employed and more recently worked part time as a Senior Professional Clinician at Massey University (Post Graduate Diploma in Psychological Practice).

Counselling / Therapy Services

My approach is systemic, inclusive and holistic. I recognise and value that personal and professional development requires the understanding of the clients’ realities of everyday life. We all have multiple identities which intersect; and whilst mainstream Psychology is dominated by euro-centric theories and research, this is not generically applied to my clients.

Overall, my therapeutic approach is focused on ensuring that my clients feel seen, heard and valued, whilst also facilitating pathway options for ongoing growth and development.

I provide sessions for adults and groups with a focus on keeping things real and practical. In 20 years of working with clients and staff I appreciate that we are not the sum of our worst behaviours or thinking. Separating the behaviour from the person is fundamental to my approach as I am interested in understanding my client’s story, first and foremost.

Talking face to face in a room or online can also be very intense. Therefore I also offer walk and talk sessions. This can allow for the more natural flow of thoughts and dialogue, without the pressure of someone staring at you. If this is not physically possible or desirable; doodling, colouring, knitting etc. whilst in session can also be helpful and is encouraged.

Supervision Services

I have provided supervision for over 15 years and have experience of supervising psychologists, interns, counsellors, social workers, prison officers, occupational therapists, and psychotherapists.

Stimulating the process of ongoing reflection and personal growth to facilitate professional development is an area of passion and I provide individual supervision face to face and online.

Q I don't know exactly what I want or what I am looking for, is that OK?

Totally :) We are complex and the beauty of our individual uniqueness is that we don't fit into tidy boxes. The process of exploration with curiosity actually allows us to find what really matters to us. Of course, this can also change over time, life stage/ phase and circumstances.

Q What if we don't hit it off?

The research is clear that the main factor supporting effective engagement is the client experiencing a warm, non judgmental and empathic style. As with any relationship, trust is developed. At the same time trust your gut feel. If after a brief chat you're not feeling it, exploring this can be very helpful for finding what out more about what you want and what might be more likely to work for you.

Q What would you know about my experience with all your privilege?

Absolutely, we all have different types and levels of privilege. For example, myself as a skilled migrant, cisgender with New Zealand recognised qualifications gives me certain layers of privilege.
I will certainly not have the exact same lived experiences as my clients. I am, however, committed to an empathic approach. I really love how Brené Brown defines this so clearly "Empathy doesn't require that we have the exact same experiences as the person sharing their story with us...Empathy is connecting with the emotion that someone is experiencing, not the event or the circumstance".
