I am a registered Psychologist and EMDR therapist. I work with adults experiencing emotional distress, anxiety, depression, and addiction problems.
Firstly, I would like to acknowledge that it can be difficult taking steps to see a professional therapist. I hope to offer empathy and compassion to make it easier for you to face whatever struggles you may be experiencing. In the initial session, time is spent on exploring the goals you want to achieve and in creating a safe place for you to look at difficult things in your life. Therapy is done at your pace and while it will be challenging or uncomfortable at times, it won’t be overwhelming.
I use a EMDR (Eye Movement, Desensitisation and Reprocessing). This type of therapy is done without the need for you to tell me the all the details of your experiences in order for us to do the work. For many people, EMDR can be completed in fewer sessions and can achieve more lasting results than through standard talking therapies.
I trained and worked in Australia before coming to New Zealand in 2007. In New Zealand I worked with men participating in an intensive programme in prison in both group and individual settings. In individual sessions a variety of issues including trauma experiences and emotional dysregulation were addressed so that they were able to cope adaptively with life stressors and better able to participate in the group therapy which focused on their offending.
In this work I utilised a number of the approaches I have been trained in such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and the use of mindfulness. My experience and knowledge in these approaches enhance my current practice in EMDR.
