Counselling works best when you feel comfortable with the person you’re talking to, and I’m good at that part. Getting people to a place where they feel at ease, and then using that as the foundation to do the real work, is where I start with every client.
I work relationally. The relationship between us isn’t the warm-up before the therapy. It is the therapy. If you don’t feel safe, nothing else lands, and I know that. So I follow your lead, I’m as interested in what’s already working in your life as what isn’t, and I build from your strengths rather than arriving with a plan for what needs fixing.
My background is weighted toward young people. Five years in New Zealand secondary schools taught me how to find a point of connection with teenagers who’d rather be anywhere else. I see adults too, and the way I work is the same at any age: you lead, and we don’t rush.
I work entirely online, which means anywhere in New Zealand, at times that actually work.
Yes, and for a lot of people it's actually easier. You're in your own space, there's no travel, no waiting room, and if the session has been hard you can just close the laptop rather than having to hold it together on the drive home. It also means I can work with people anywhere in New Zealand, including places where the wait for a local counsellor is months long.
Both. My background is weighted toward young people but adults make up a genuine part of my practice. Anxiety, transitions, perfectionism, parenting, working out what comes next, all of it. Quite often it starts with someone looking for help for their teenager and realising they need somewhere for themselves too.
That's the most common starting point, not a red flag. Almost nobody arrives keen. Finding a way in with someone who'd rather not be there is genuinely one of the things I'm best at, and it usually happens faster than parents expect. The free call is a good first step, you get a sense of me, and then you decide whether to mention it to them.
