Abdul Salam Kizhakkum Parambil

Clinical Psychologist

I’m a registered Clinical Psychologist with more than 12 years of experience in the field. I work largely using a relational – psychodynamic model and offer both long-term and short-term therapy and psychological services. I have also received training in Mentalization Based Treatment(MBT) and use this model to inform my practice where appropriate. MBT is one of the four evidence based approaches recommended for Borderline Personality Disorder.

Approach:

Beyond diagnoses, psychotherapy is helpful in understanding oneself and one’s emotional and relational patterns. Often one may get caught up in repeated patterns and psychotherapy can help reflecting on these to build awareness into them. The most important thing is us being able to work out a working relationship between us and understand your goals for being in therapy. This can help us see how your past informs your present as well as figure out ways to handle the current issues and future. I look at therapy as a way of rewriting your life’s story – us being able to co-construct a different version of yourself and your life.

Qualification and experience:

My qualifications include M.A. in Psychology, M.Phil. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology (Nimhans, India) and additional training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy (OIPPP – W.A. White Institute, New York) and Mentalization Based Treatment (Lifespan Psychology, Perth). Most of my clinical experience has been in the area of Personality Disorders and in the management of chronic difficulties including anxiety, depression, OCD and relationship conflicts. I do offer short term therapy for circumscribed and acute difficulties when appropriate.

I also offer supervision to therapists who are interested in the relational psychodynamic/ postmodern intersubjective paradigm.
