Caleb Carati

Clinical Psychologist - Online therapy, supervision and EMDR

About me

I was born in Whangarei to a Dutch pakeha dad, and kiwi pakeha mum. I had my infancy in Germany, my childhood in Otautahi/Christchurch, and my adolescence in Sweden, before returning to Aotearoa as a young adult to study psychology. I achieved my Bachelor’s and Honour’s degrees at University of Canterbury (UC), and my PhD and PGDipClinPsych from Victoria University of Wellington (VUW).

I identify as a cis heterosexual man (he/him), and as a bit of a geek, as I enjoy role-playing video games, Warhammer, Star Wars and the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, among others. I like to snowboard in the winter and try to surf in the summer (but I’m not very good at it).

My experience

I have over 10 years experience in the field. I have worked in public health, both inpatient and outpatient settings. I exclusively use evidence-based practice for effective, lasting positive change. I have a particular interest in the resolution of childhood adversity and/or trauma and how these experiences intricately intertwine with present day difficulties.

My approach

In my practice, I am committed to providing the highest standard of treatment with a focus on tangible improvements in quality of life. Central to this commitment is my dedication to evidence-based treatments, specifically Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Eye-Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR).

Professional supervision

I offer individual clinical supervision to mental health professionals. In this capacity, I tend to take a strengths-based, solutions-focused approach. Working on taking a middle-ground stance between professional/clinical matters, whilst also creating space for personal reflection. The balance of this distinction, naturally, is subject to the needs and preferences within the supervision relationship.
