Ministry of Justice

The Ministry of Justice is seeking applications from Counsellors nationwide who are interested in providing services for the Family Court.

Counselling referrals are directed by a Family Court Judge if they believe it is the best means of assisting the parties with their communication or implementing a decision of the Family Court. These referrals can usually be accommodated alongside your current workload.

 

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

A minimum of Level 6 NZQA or equivalent in one of the following fields of study:

  • Counselling
  • Social Work
  • Psychotherapy
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Psychiatry

To be appointed as a Family Court Counsellor you must be a current member or affiliated to an approved organisation or professional body and hold an up-to-date practising certificate.

 

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Experience in family harm including coercive control, child safety, abuse, and neglect.
  • Cultural awareness and in particular, an understanding of tikanga.
  • Working with parties experiencing interparental conflict, who may be stuck in negative communication cycles.
  • Ability to work in a time-limited context in a solution focussed way.
  • Working with at times resistant parties.
  • Working on conciliation rather than reconciliation.
  • An understanding of child development stages is essential and maintaining a focus on the needs of the child.
