Individual and Family Counselling

The idea of seeking support through counselling can be daunting, and it’s often surrounded by the mystery of what to expect.  By seeking help, you are taking a brave and beneficial step toward enhancing your well-being.

About me

Hi, my name is Janet. I have over 20 years counselling experience. I thoroughly enjoy people. When I first became a counsellor, I set a goal to someday begin my own practice. But I felt that in order to be an effective counsellor, I first needed to enhance my understanding of persons of all ages and stages of life. Having set this goal, I performed various roles in various organizations. This allowed me to achieve my objective while growing professionally and personally.

While living in the United States, my counselling career was focused toward a younger generation. In the academic area, I counselled middle and high school students. Following that, I taught Psychology and Business Psychology at University. Branching out into the community, I began working alongside young people and parents/caregivers in various residential, foster, or adoptive settings.

Since immigrating to New Zealand in 2011, my efforts have been focused toward working with adults. This has allowed me to counsel people who have undergone significant changes in their relationships, their jobs, and their health. Throughout my profession, I have refined my skills. I believe my life experience has allowed me to learn more, be more and engage more. I hope to incorporate this into my practice.

About you

By coming to counselling, you will no longer struggle to be alone. I offer you a safe and supportive space, where together we can explore what it will take for you to move forward.  For example this might include building better relationships, reducing the risk of medical or emotional health issues, or learning to manage challenges that can affect your well-being.

About the counselling process

When I meet with you, the first part of our process will be to gain an understanding of the difficulty. When you are sure that I understand the problem, we then define some goals to work toward. These will offer focus for future sessions. From there, we work in partnership to reach your goals. These can be achieved by building up your knowledge of what might be behind the issue, and developing skills to address this.

The length of time and frequency for counselling sessions will depend on your needs. I offer both short and long term therapy.
