Lemon Counselling

If you feel like from the outside it looks like you have everything under control, but inside you feel overwhelmed and not quite sure where to start.  Perhaps it feels like a ball of tangled mess, that you can’t quite untangle to figure out the first steps.

This is a common reason to seek out counselling. Life can get tough sometimes and when that happens, it helps to talk to someone. A person removed from your own circle, who doesn’t have an agenda or opinion about what is best for you. Someone who can actually listen and ask the right questions, without judgement or criticism.

A bit about me:

I was born and raised in South Africa and have been living in beautiful New Zealand for 9 years. I have a slight obsession with houseplants (the jungle vibes are real), and I’ll probably greet your dog before I greet you — no offense. I have a Bachelor’s degree in psychology and counselling as well as a Certificate in online counselling, trauma informed practice and NSSI.

I believe in empowering individuals to take control of their lives. I work in a non-judgemental, kind, curious way that honours the individual’s inner power and wisdom. Through my own therapy journey I have been lost in the woods and am intimately familiar with the shame, sadness, anxiety & confusion that jumps out from behind the trees. Together, we can navigate your unique forest and find our way through it.

I work within:

  • Adult Neurodiversity – as well as the link between being Neuro-spicy and problematic habits or substance misuse.
  • Life Transitions – anything from saying goodbye to sleep because of a new baby, to the end of a relationship and everything in between.
  • Immigration – having immigrated myself (twice), I get how hard it can be to create a new life somewhere new and strange.
  • Grief – losing an important person or entity (job, dreams or pets) can be like learning to breathe under water. Painful, unnatural and seemingly impossible.
  • Self-esteem – when the cruelest voice is your own, life can get more painful than it needs to be.
  • Anxiety and Stress – this can show up as constant worry, racing thoughts, sleeping irregularities, irritability, panic attacks or feeling “on edge”.

Q What if I've had a bad experience with Counselling?

Firstly, I’m really sorry that happened. Working with people’s pain is delicate work, so when a counsellor misses something, it can land harder than most people realise. Ideally, the therapeutic relationship should feel safe enough for you to say when something feels off or when you’ve been hurt. I would like to encourage you to keep looking for someone that's a good fit for you.

Q What if my problem doesn't feel big enough?

That thought "but other people have it worse" is natural when comparing our lives to others in an attempt to gain clarity and understanding.

It's a bit like standing in the rain, telling yourself it shouldn't feel cold and wet, because somewhere else there is a hurricane. Just because others may have it worse, doesn't mean you don't deserve the right to choose - to open an umbrella.

Q Do you speak Afrikaans?

Ja, ek het grootgeword in Vaalwater, diep in die Waterberge, waar almal my nog as Leentjie Blignault ken (my nooiensvan). Afrikaans lê na aan my hart en bly my moedertaal. Ons kan dus gerus die berading in Afrikaans doen — solank U nie omgee as ek hier en daar ’n Engelse woord inwerk nie. Ek het my graad in Engels voltooi, so baie van die “official terminology” leef nog in my kop in Engels.

Q What is your fee and cancellation policy?

- I charge $150 per hour for a 60 mins session.
- Life can be unpredictable, and I want to honour that. Each client receives one missed session per year free of charge. For all other appointments, cancellations need to be made with at least 24 hours’ notice to avoid the full session fee.
