EMDR – Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

Psychological intervention for treating trauma along with other anxiety disorders. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation of the brain to access the memories, memory networks and associated sensations, negative thought processes and emotions. The intervention enables the memory to be reprocessed in a safe, therapeutic environment that results in the neutralizing of the memory so that an individual may still be able to think about the past event, however not experience the distress previously associated with the event. The feedback from clients after the memory is fully processed in an EMDR session is usually one of positive relief. One specific benefit of this approach is that the client’s brain ‘does all the work’ and the therapist’s role is only to facilitate the process. In addition, you do not have to talk in great detail about the painful event in order to get relief from it.

The therapist will firstly ensure that a client has adequate coping/relaxation strategies to cope with any other memories and/or distressing emotions that may arise between sessions. The process of bilateral stimulation is either achieved visually by tracking eye movements, left to right, or by tactile sensory input (tapping on alternative knees). Some therapists have equipment that can be used for auditory or tactile bilateral stimulation.

EMDR has been shown to be an effective treatment for PTSD, anxiety, phobias and panic disorders, Depression, Grief, Phantom limb pain.

A focussed treatment for releasing core neurophysiological sources of emotional/body pain, trauma, and other challenging symptoms. Brainspotting is a powerful, focused treatment method that works by identifying, processing and releasing core neurophysiological sources of emotional/body pain, trauma, dissociation and a variety of other challenging symptoms. Brainspotting is a simultaneous form of diagnosis and treatment, enhanced with Biolateral sound, which is deep, direct, and powerful yet focused and containing.

Brainspotting functions as a neurobiological tool to support the clinical healing relationship. There is no replacement for a mature, nurturing therapeutic presence and the ability to engage another suffering human in a safe and trusting relationship where they feel heard, accepted, and understood. Brainspotting gives us a tool, within this clinical relationship, to neurobiologically locate, focus, process, and release experiences and symptoms that are typically out of reach of the conscious mind and its cognitive and language capacity.

Brainspotting works with the deep brain and the body through its direct access to the autonomic and limbic systems within the body’s central nervous system. Brainspotting is accordingly a physiological tool/treatment which has profound psychological, emotional, and physical consequences. For more info see

Counselling for Addictions

I am passionate about helping people with addiction issues accomplish their hopes of living a life no longer dominated by alcohol or drug use. I have many years of experience to draw on counselling people with addictions. I can help you create a life that both you, and others, will value.

Are you:

  • feeling stuck in the hell created by addiction
  • living with the fear of going into withdrawals
  • wanting your Sunday mornings back
  • tired of the constant chase of getting drugs
  • stressed by the risk of losing your job
  • getting close to losing the person you love
  • simply sick of surviving rather than living?

If you are reading this webpage, some part of you doesn’t want to be like this anymore. The counselling I provide will use a variety of therapeutic techniques to facilitate change within you on many levels, so that your recovery is solid and lasting. Depending on your needs I will help you with such things as: tools for managing emotions; strategies for dealing with stress; communication skills; assertiveness skills; self esteem building; learning how to be in charge of your decision making; repairing damaged relationships; reconnecting with your spiritual side; strategies for relapse prevention; working through buried grief or shame.

Are You Affected by Someone Else’s Substance Abuse?

Partners, children, parents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, colleagues, sports mates, employers . . . many, many people are affected when someone in their life has problems with addiction to alcohol and other drugs. Affected people frequently experience a confusing mix of emotions. They also can lack the knowledge and skills to help the addicted person, or work out how to change how it’s affecting their own life.

Confidential counselling can help those affected in a number of ways. It is a private place where you can take the time to gain clarity about the addiction, the role it has come to play in your life, and get support to take effective action to reduce its effect on you. This often involves education so you can understand why addiction is such a hard thing to stop. It might help you to learn how to broach the topic rather than avoiding it. It can empower you with assertiveness skills, so you can communicate your needs, and put boundaries around what is and isn’t acceptable, with someone who is using a substance. It is always a place where you can air all your feelings, from anger to sadness to guilt, and find new ways to manage your emotional response to the addiction so that you can emerge from the fog it has enveloped you with.

Employers and Business Owners

Employers can find themselves in quite a quandary when they believe a staff member has an alcohol or drug problem. You might not know how to raise the issue with an employee you have a longstanding relationship with; you might want to keep a previously valued staff member, but are struggling with their reduced productivity; you may be concerned about potential safety issues; you might simply want to help because you know life has been difficult for them lately.

I have a professional and transparent approach to workplace counselling, that will help you and your employee navigate the issues that arise when addiction impinges on the work environment, and let you get back to running your business.

My confidential service can provide your business with:

  • advice and information about addiction
  • workplace drug and alcohol education seminars
  • counselling to clarify your position and identify action steps
  • quality drug and alcohol assessments
  • experienced addiction counselling for your employees

Auricular Acupuncture for Substance Use Recovery

Auricular acupuncture is widely used in the United Kingdom, America, and Asia where it is recognized as a complementary therapy to assist with the reduction of withdrawals from substance abuse. It is known to work on the main organs, helping them to flush out toxins from the body. Many studies have shown that people in recovery find it helps them to sleep more easily. I trained to use auricular acupuncture in the UK, and am delighted to offer it as part of the addiction treatment services I provide.
