I often think the hardest part of counselling is finding the right person to work with. All counsellors, including myself, seem to say the same things: registered, person-centred, relational. I am all of those things. But mostly, and I think it’s my biggest strength as a counsellor, I am excellent at building authentic relationships, sitting alongside clients to highlight and use their own strengths, and providing company through the challenging times. I lean on compassion a lot, in my own life and in my practice, and I try to offer a space that is free from judgment and meets you where you are.
But, as many of us say, the relationship is what matters most. So if you’re interested, please reach out. We can have a chat, you can decide whether I’m giving you a good vibe or not (with no hard feelings either way), and we can go from there.
I work entirely online, which means anywhere in New Zealand.
Yes, and for a lot of people it's actually easier. You're in your own space, there's no travel, no waiting room, and if the session has been hard you can just close the laptop rather than having to hold it together on the drive home. It also means I can work with people anywhere in New Zealand, including places where the wait for a local counsellor is months long.
Not much, and that's the point. You tell me a bit about what's going on, as much or as little as you like, and you get a feel for whether talking to me comes easily. There's nothing to prepare and no obligation at the end. If I'm not the right fit, no hard feelings, and I'll happily point you toward someone who might be.
Yes, from around eleven, and it's where much of my experience sits, including five years in New Zealand secondary schools. If your teenager isn't keen, that's the most common starting point rather than a red flag. Finding a way in with someone who'd rather not be there is one of the things I'm best at. For under-18s I ask a parent or guardian to be involved from the start.
