Mary Weir

Hiatus Studio

I prioritise presence and authentic connection – using dynamic, adaptable, and client-led therapy methods. I trust participant expertise in their own experience, to know what approaches work best for them. Art Therapy supports unique and creative problem solving without requiring artistic ‘skill’.

I provide support for:

  • depression
  • existential anxiety
  • abuse & trauma
  • addiction
  • sex & sexuality
  • developmental challenges
  • attachment and relationship challenges – for children, youth, adults, LGBTQIA+, traditional & non-traditional partnerships / families

Counselling Services

No skill or previous experience with creative art is needed to benefit from Art therapy!

I use verbal-reflection, combined with creative writing, visual art, dance/movement, drama techniques, and interaction with nature – to adapt to personal and expressive needs. Emphasis is on process rather than ‘product’, and I support your individual comfort and connection to the forms. Sessions may be primarily art-based or involve much more conversation than creation depending on the individual.

Art Therapy can be highly supportive for those whom traditional talk-therapy has proven challenging, however it could benefit any-one of any age!

Clients often express positive transformation in the following areas:
Self-esteem and self-worth; Empathy, understanding and connection; Sense of meaning and empowerment; Self-expression, like setting boundaries or stating needs; Perspectives on past; Expanded future potential; Personal and social wellbeing.

Young children and/or non-verbal clients may express similar experiences through:
More frequent independent behaviour; Responsiveness and social engagement; Expanded expressive abilities; Increased calmness and harmony in relationship.

Counselling Approach

Art Therapy is non-diagnostic, although I can co-create treatment plans and therapeutic approaches with those who have been given a diagnosis, to support their recovery in cooperation with mental-health or disability services.

I have special interest in Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) – based Art Therapy; as well as using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Gestault, Psychodynamic, Jungian and Mindfulness -based Art Therapies regularly.

Personal feeling, thought, and behaviour, is inextricably linked to the wider social context. I think critically about the broader network of challenges affecting my clients, and seek to empower positive growth through this systemic lens.
