Nicole Christie

Client Centered Therapy

Welcome!

Happy New Year! I have new availability opening up in 2024! Please get in touch if you’re interested in securing a spot with me before they all go.

I believe there is strength in vulnerability and by seeking support, you show strength! It’s the first step in the road to healing, so well done.  When you show up for yourself, or your loved one, you initiate the momentum into wellness and, I believe, a happier, more fulfilled life.

There are many reasons why people seek support in the form of therapy and counselling.  Perhaps you have suffered a grievance or trauma, have had trouble with key relationships in your life, or feel your own mental wellbeing needs a little (or a lot) of assistance to get back on track.  Whatever your reason for seeking support, please know I will show up with genuine compassion and a willingness to meet your needs specifically, as best I can.  I will always provide a safe and confidential space for you and provide useful tools and strategies to use beyond our sessions.

Background & Experience

I have worked with children and young people from an early age, volunteering at my local Kindergarten as a student and teaching ballet and contemporary dance to young people throughout my teens.  I am a fully registered, Primary trained, teacher and have taught ages 5 – 13 across the curriculum, in a variety of socio-economic areas.

Following this, I gained my counselling education while also raising a young family of my own.  I currently work as a counsellor in a secondary school and am completing my Masters research.  I bring a real passion and zest for this profession and specialise in working with young people, however I also have experience in working with adults.

If you have a young person in your life who is struggling with anxiety, depression, eating disorders, body image issues, phobias, bullying, self-esteems, identity issues, lack of direction/motivation, challenges managing family dynamics, or other related issues, I would love to hear from you!   Equally, if you are an adult with any of the above issues, I would be able to support you fully with these.

I have also had experience in working with grief and loss.

Counselling Approach

My approach is client-centered and pluralistic, meaning I will assess your specific requirements and tailor my approach to your needs.  I always ground my work in solid research-based theory and specialise in Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness, Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT).  I am committed to the principles of Te Tiriti O Waitangi and honour the cultural background of each client I encounter.

I am a current Masters student at the University of Auckland so I have an understanding of relevant, effective modalities in the Counselling profession, particularly as they pertain to young people.  I regularly engage in professional supervision with accredited academics.

I can offer support for families struggling with getting young people motivated to engage with school.  These include working intensively with emotion regulation, distress tolerance and mindfulness.

If you are a parent or guardian who is overwhelmed by the needs of your young person, I can support you in your crucial role.
