Dr Sophie Muir

Clinical Psychologist

I am a Clinical Psychologist experienced in formulating and treating a range of psychological and mental health concerns. I work with people to process difficult feelings, relationships, and other life challenges that may be impacting their ability to live and function well. I enjoy helping my clients find meaning within difficult life circumstances and explore how to more closely live in line with their values.

I work with adults.

Areas I can support you with include:

  • anxiety
  • depression
  • anger
  • stress
  • interpersonal and relationship difficulties
  • sexual identity
  • difficult life choices
  • self-esteem
  • values and goals

Counselling/Therapy Services

Therapy can be reflective in nature (with a focus on building insight) and/or skills-focused (learning specific strategies for managing difficult thoughts, feelings and behaviours).

As a clinical psychologist my role is to:

  • Provide you a framework for understanding your concerns and their origins (note: if beneficial and you would like, this can include diagnosis);

  • Challenge unhelpful thoughts and beliefs/ offer new ways of thinking;

  • Support you to make room for painful emotions;

  • Support behaviour change;

  • Be collaborative and non-judgemental.

The change process is non-linear; it’s normal to have ups and downs, breakthroughs and set-backs as therapy progresses.

Counselling/Therapy Approach

I draw from a range of therapeutic approaches, depending on your individual needs including:

  • Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT)
  • Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)
  • Mindfulness
  • Motivational Interviewing
  • Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)
  • Schema Therapy
